Smartphone Photography and Social Media: The Shared Image - 38774 - ARTU 2400 - 704 | |||||||||||||||||||||
For over 200 years, photography and social media have shared a symbiotic relationship based in the physical world of objects. Photography, the so-called “Democratic Art”, has been used by artists, journalists, scientists, capitalists, governments, and regular citizens, and the co-evolution of photography and social media tell a story of ever-changing cultural and social practices. In recent years, digital photography and social media have embedded themselves even more deeply into everyday life and contemporary culture. While still in its infancy, our use of digital imagery with social media platforms is forging new methods of interaction and redefining the ways in which we express and communicate – with results and consequences that are often invisible and left largely unexamined. This class will explore the histories and theories of photography in the context of its relationship to social media platforms, both physical and virtual. By using smartphone photography to engage with projects on various social media platforms, students will be asked to consider the ways in which they use imagery to express themselves, produce meaning, and construct self-identity, as well as how that meaning is creating new connections and forms of communication.
The shorter version is:
The Shared Image approaches contemporary image making in the context of Photography’s relationship to Social Media. The creation of original content that deals with the histories, visual components, and conceptual approaches of Photography will be posted to social media platforms like Instagram and Tumblr. Students will consider the role imagery plays in their daily lives, and begin to examine how their ability to communicate with that imagery defines their roles in a larger, virtual community.
