Global Governance - 52498 - POLS 4896 - 802
Topical Course Description: You are probably familiar with how a state government functions and governs its national affairs. What about governance at the global level without a “world government”? In this course, you will learn how global governance works by examining efforts at various levels such as states’ contributions to and influence on global governance, and regional characteristics of cooperation. We will also look at the international level, asking questions such as whether there will be challenges to the current international order and norms from rising powers. While studying various aspects of global governance at these different levels, we will also learn the roles and activities of regional and international organizations as well as the creation and influence of international laws and norms. The issue areas we will cover range from some traditional issue areas such as security and economic issues to those where there are competing ideas put forward by different groups of states in developing new international laws and norms such as cyberspace.
