Topical Course Description: This class explores Renaissance (14th-early 17th centuries) visual culture from a global perspective. Artworks, artists and ideas travel as never before, echoing the era’s international entanglements created by trade, diplomacy, war and conquest. We will consider the many transcultural aspects of the art of the era, from Islamic textiles in Renaissance altarpieces to Renaissance portraits of Japanese diplomats and African Imperial soldiers to Aztec featherwork in Habsburg Spain.
